Frutillar, 27 km north of Puerto Varas on the western shore of Lake Llanquihue, is the most carefully preserved of the German settler towns. Its lower town, Frutillar Bajo, is a line of painted wooden houses, gardens and cafés along a beach, with a roofed pier and the Osorno, Puntiagudo and Calbuco volcanoes across the water.
It is also a music town. The Teatro del Lago, a copper-and-timber concert hall standing over the lake, opened in 2010 and hosts a year-round programme, and the Semanas Musicales de Frutillar festival has been held every summer since 1968. In 2017 UNESCO named Frutillar a Creative City of Music.
Top things to do at Frutillar
See a concert — or tour — the Teatro del Lago
Check the programme before you go: classical concerts, opera, jazz and family shows. Guided tours of the building run on many days, and the lakeside foyer café is worth a visit on its own.
Visit the German Colonial Museum
The Museo Histórico Colonial Alemán recreates the settlers’ world with a water mill, a smithy, a traditional house and gardens. It is the best place in the region to understand how the lake was colonised.
Kuchen on the waterfront
Frutillar’s cafés take their German-style cakes seriously — raspberry, murta and cheese kuchen are the classics. Pair one with a walk to the end of the pier.

How to get to Frutillar
- From Puerto Varas: about 30 minutes by car on Ruta 5, or by regular minibus to Frutillar Alto and then a local bus down to the lake.
- By tour: half-day tours often combine Frutillar with the town of Llanquihue — see our tours page.
- For a concert: the last minibuses back are early; drive, book a transfer or stay the night.
Insider tips
- Frutillar Alto (by the highway) and Frutillar Bajo (on the lake) are different places — the one you want is Bajo.
- Semanas Musicales tickets (late January to early February) sell out; buy early and book a bed well in advance.
- On a grey day Frutillar is still lovely — the museum and theatre make it a good bad-weather plan.
