Why visit Puerto Varas?

Volcanoes, lakes and wooden houses at the edge of Patagonia

Puerto Varas is the prettiest town in Chile’s Lake District: shingled houses and rose gardens built by German settlers in the 1850s, on the shore of the country’s second-largest lake, with the snow cone of the Osorno volcano filling the view across the water.

It is also the most practical base in the south. Within an hour or two you can stand on a volcano, watch turquoise water tear through lava at Petrohué, sail across Todos los Santos lake, hear an orchestra in Frutillar or eat curanto in Chiloé — and be back for dinner by the lake. This guide shows you how to fit it all in, and how to make the most of the famously changeable weather.
