At 2,652 m, the Osorno volcano is not the highest in Chile, but it may be the most beautiful: an almost perfectly symmetrical cone, capped with glaciers, rising directly out of Lake Llanquihue. It is part of Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park and dominates every view from Puerto Varas, Frutillar and Puerto Octay.
The volcano last erupted in the 19th century and is closely monitored. What makes it special for visitors is access: a paved road climbs from the Ensenada side to the Centro de Ski y Montaña Volcán Osorno at roughly 1,200 m, where chairlifts continue higher, and marked paths lead across lava flows to extinct side craters.
Top things to do at Osorno Volcano
Drive up to the ski and mountain centre
The road from Ensenada climbs in switchbacks through lenga forest onto bare volcanic slopes. At the top there is a café and viewpoint over Lake Llanquihue and the Calbuco volcano; in summer chairlifts run to higher viewpoints, in winter (roughly June to September, snow permitting) it becomes a small ski resort.
Walk to the Crater Rojo
From the upper car park, trails cross the red scoria of old eruptions to the Crater Rojo and other side vents. Stay on the marked paths: loose volcanic rock is hard going, and weather changes fast.
Hike, climb or trek on the glacier
Experienced mountaineers climb to the summit with a licensed guide and full glacier equipment. For most people, a guided glacier-viewpoint trek or the Paso Desolación trail on the north-east flank is the better way to feel the scale of the mountain.
How to get to Osorno Volcano
- By tour: the easiest option. Most Osorno tours combine the volcano with the Petrohué falls in a 7-hour day from Puerto Varas.
- By car: take Ruta 225 east from Puerto Varas to Ensenada (about 47 km), then turn up the signed volcano road — allow roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to the top.
- By public transport: minibuses run to Ensenada and Petrohué, but there is no regular service up the volcano road itself.
Insider tips
- Look out of your window at breakfast. If the summit is in cloud, swap your plans — the view is the whole point.
- It is much colder and windier at the ski centre than in town. Bring a warm layer even in January.
- Chairlift schedules and prices change by season; check before you go rather than assuming they are running.
- Combine the volcano with Petrohué on the same day: they are on the same road.
