Lake Llanquihue is the second-largest lake in Chile, around 860 km² of deep, cold water filling a basin carved by Ice Age glaciers. Its shore is lined by the towns founded by German settlers in the second half of the 19th century — Puerto Varas, Llanquihue, Frutillar, Puerto Octay — and its eastern side is guarded by the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes.
The lake is big enough to create its own weather, and its moods change by the hour: flat and silver in the morning, whipped into whitecaps by the afternoon wind. Circling it by car or bicycle is one of the best days out in the region.
Top things to do at Lake Llanquihue
Drive the lake loop
The loop, very roughly 190 km, links Puerto Varas, Ensenada, Las Cascadas, Puerto Octay, Frutillar and Llanquihue. Allow a full day with stops for viewpoints, beaches, kuchen and the little lakeside churches.
Swim and kayak in summer
Between December and March the beaches at Puerto Varas, Ensenada and Frutillar fill with swimmers, kayakers and sailors. The water stays cold — refreshing is the polite word.
Visit Puerto Octay
The quietest of the lake towns, on a hill above a sheltered bay on the northern shore, with shingled wooden houses and wide views south to the volcanoes.
How to get to Lake Llanquihue
- From Puerto Varas: you are already on it — the Costanera runs along the shore.
- By car: the loop is paved all the way round; rent a car in Puerto Varas or at El Tepual airport.
- By tour: several tours cover parts of the loop, including Frutillar and Puerto Octay.
Insider tips

- The afternoon wind can make kayaking hard work — paddle in the morning.
- Fill up with fuel in Puerto Varas or Frutillar; stations are sparse on the eastern shore.
